This week, the students and I started a new unit on electricity. Don't know about you, but I know very little about electromagnets, series circuits, and Michael Faraday. Thank goodness for a husband who can teach me about all I need to know so I can teach my kids!

Tuesday we had a "date" night where J sat down with me and built circuits and drew diagrams to help me out. I was a successful teacher of electricity in school this week, thanks to the help of a pretty nerdy very smart husband.

good things on this friday

  • I'm in the process of making THIS for dinner. Oh my goodness, the steak smells so good! And the tzatziki sauce tastes wonderful!
  • It's Friday (!!!), and I enjoyed a a great beer at happy hour with the other teachers from my school after work.
  • I painted my nails red this week, which is so not like me...the last time my nails were painted was for my wedding in July. I've received multiple compliments on them this week. Many were from the girls in my class, but it still makes me feel good.
  • One of my favorite shows is one tonight!
  • Found out today that I am up for a new cell phone...looks like I know what I'll be shopping for this weekend
  • I am almost done reading a fabulous book. Review to come soon...
  • I heard today that one of my dear friends from college recently got engaged!
  • We have 5 boxes of girl scout cookies...not sure if this is a good or bad thing.
  • It was practically 70 degrees out today. Too bad they're calling for snow Sunday night.
  • J is at the store buying a bottle of wine to go with the dinner. Could it get much better?
What's making you Friday so wonderful? I'd love to know!

nothing like a good beer

One of the best gifts I've ever bought...
This was J's birthday gift. For the past 3 months, we've been getting 12 micro-brews delivered to us. Pretty wonderful! Sadly, I only did a 3 month subscription. We're already talking about what next big holiday is coming up so we can have a reason to order these again. St. Patrick's Day? Perhaps!

Oh 10 year olds boys...

In the hall during one of our bathroom breaks today...

Student: Mrs. W, would you rather have a land pet or a water pet?
Mrs. W: Ummm, a land pet
Student: Like an elephant?
Mrs. W: Yes, just like an elephant

Two minutes later...
Student: Would you rather ride in the ocean on a shark...or an OCTOPUS?!
Me: Do I have to pick?
Student: Yes. It's your only form of transportation in the world.
Me: A shark I guess
Student: Hmmm, bad choice

...almost as odd as the "wet cat" incident!

the duck

This picture was taken on August 13, 2007. The day I got Layla. Her back story is truly crazy, but that's for another time and post. Today's post is more about her duck. Her gross, stinky but very loved duck. Notice how pretty and yellow it is in the photo above. When our friend, Ms. B., brought Layla to me on this day, Layla sort of came with this duck. She took it out with her every time you took her out for the bathroom, and she tried her hardest to bring it on all walks. For our first few months together, the duck had a battery operated quacker (I'm pretty sure this was never meant to be a dog toy!). Whenever she bit on it the wrong way, it'd start to quack and scare the living day lights out of the dumb dog. She's not the brightest. Anyhow, after a few short months together, I noticed the quacker was gone. And the duck was starting to lose it's pretty yellow coat. It was full of holes and fading. Here we are, a year and a half later, and this gross duck still has a place in our home...

I hate to say it Layla, but I think your duck is on his last life. He probably won't be around much longer. Your poor mom has become disgusted enough by him, and she's willing to buy you new toys. She knows they'll never live up to your first love, but it's time. Say goodbye!

Remember last week when I wrote about the parent from my class who sent me the super nice email? You know, the one that totally motivated me and helped me realize that I'm slowly getting the hang of this job?

On Friday, she sent in this cake for the husband and myself. Warmed my heart so much!
Not only is it cute, but it's pretty yummy too!

One last thing, I changed my whole blog layout and look last night. Share your thoughts!

Thanks Valentine

Dear Valentine,
Thanks for making Saturday such a wonderful day.

Thanks for waking up first and taking Layla out. Thanks for coming back in and making me banana coffee.

Thanks for running errands all over town with me and for not getting mad when I was terrible at directing you in the car. What do you expect though?

Thanks for taking me to see this great movie and for the made me cry and you know that's always a sign of a good movie for me.

Thanks for the long walk with the dog. She and I both had fun. She probably more than me.

Thanks for eating too much chocolate with me.

Thanks for complimenting the dinner I made for you.

And most importantly, thanks for being my husband. Valentine's Day (and everyday) is more fun with you!

Your Valentine

what a deal!

For Christmas, J and I bought our nieces and nephew these great duffle bags from LL Bean. I had one as a child, and I still use it today. We figured it would be a good, pratical gift that would get a lot of use from the nieces and nephew. We even got them in their favorite colors and had their names embroidered on them. They were a big hit on Christmas morning, as the kids put them to use immediatley by packing up all their new presents.

After ordering them, we found out we got a $10 store credit to LL Bean. It expires next week, so I sat down the other day and looked for something I could use, and found this wonderful summer tote...
I also found a free shipping coupon thanks to a quick google search, so I am getting the tote for next to nothing. Don't ya love that? It's on backorder 'til February 25, so it'll be a few weeks, but I'm excited to have this to carry my things to and from the beach in this summer!

free music friday

I just recently remembered that the library has more than books. I am a frequent visitor of our local library, as I check out piles and piles of books for my students each time we start a new science or social studies unit. About two weeks ago, I remembered that the library has much more than books, and I went online and reserved some CD's I've been interested in listening to. Got my first today, and it's so good. I've always loved Alison Krauss, but hadn't heard this CD yet. I am very pleased to now have it on my iPod! What a great money saver!

I am the coolest teacher in all the land. Look at these incredible valentine's I picked up for my kiddos today. I was going to go with Camp Rock or Hannah Montana, but come know that EVERYONE is going to have those. I want my cards to stand out. And who can resist cards that come with creepy dog and cat face tattoos?
*The tattoos were quickly renamed "Cattoos" by my darling husband the minute I took them out of the Target bag. What a witty and wonderful guy I married...

Big Day

J got this in the mail today...It's the G1 (Google Phone), and he's obsessed. He may or may not have stayed home from work to sign for the UPS package today. Now I am facing the dilemma of whether I keep my very basic $19.99 phone from Verizon, or do i switch over with him to a smart phone...decisions, decisions!

Any of you recently switch to a smart phone? Would you recommend it?

another day

Today wasn't such a great day at school. I was impatient with my students and coworkers. It's so easy to get frustrated in teaching. I just need to constantly remind myself that these little people I spend my day with are only nine and ten. I can only expect so much from them.

Tomorrow is another day. And it's going to be a good one. We're going on a field trip to hear the Virginia Symphony . And my kids are actually pretty excited. The girls are all dressing up because as they told me today, they want to look "classy."

So, now let's focus on some positives. Some good things in my life right now:

Yesterday after work I stopped by Target to pick up some baskets to organize our linen closet. Since moving in, this closet has been a mess. Nothing is easy to find, and there was no method to the madness. Everything was just thrown onto shelves. Thanks to twelve very well spent dollars, the closet is looking like you can find what you need it. This is a first and it feels so nice!

This is my way of sneaking in chocolate to my life. This doesn't mean I don't eat any other chocolate, but I am trying to eat less. Eating one of these doesn't make me feel so guilty. And best of all, they're so yummy!

And finally, this is an excerpt I got from a parent of a student today:

It put a little tear in my eye...maybe I am doing something right!

my week

This week I:
Went flea marketing with J and picked up these cute Fire King prep bowls. Four bucks and so much happiness!

Picked up these pretty gerbera daisies for our bedroom. Aren't they lovely in that vase?

Used these tomatillas in this delicious meal last night. This was definitely a hit in our home!

One of my students brought me these gummy hearts. When I thanked her for the sweet gift and told her how nice that was to think of me, she responded with, "Oh you're welcome. They were just leftover from our super bowl party and my mom wanted to get rid of 'em"....oh fourth grade. I love your honesty.

"I have 2 fingers"

J and I have been laughing over this non-stop for the past few hours...

Poor kid!

one of those days

Do you ever have one of those days where the work day ends and you just want to go home and cuddle with your dog and eat copious amounts of chocolate and leftover dip from the game last night because your students do weird things like break other people's pencils in half just because or ask you dumb question like who the manufacturer of your water bottle is or spill marbles all over your floor or jump out of their seats all day or..... ? No? This isn't familiar to you? Hmmm...must be nice.

But, do you ever have one of those days where you come home and find a package by your door that you totally forgot about and suddenly your crappy day disappears? Finding this inside the package from the dear Emily Anderson was enough to ease my troubled mind. It was all I needed after a fourth grade filled day! Thanks Emily for all these great goodies! I am pretty psyched about them (did I just say psych?). Especially the pretty Collage Press papers since it seems that the Virginia stores have no desire to carry it. You really made my day!
