Dogiversary

Two years ago today, J and I drove to a town about an hour away to pick up a shy, little 20 pound mutt who had been rescued by one of my mom's friends. The puppy had been found in a home where she and her brothers and sisters were neglected and left to roam free by a 50 mph road. It was when my mom's friend found a dead puppy in the yard that she knew she had to do something. She took the puppies back home (which yes, it is illegal to take puppies) and left a note for the owner. The owner and game warden called her the next day and requested that she bring them back immediately or else she'd be arrested, as this family was not breaking a law (even though they had a DEAD puppy in the yard!). Luckily, my mom's friend managed to keep three of the seven puppies because the family wasn't interested in them. Layla was one of the three. She was six months old and we'd never heard her make a sound.

This is at the park where we picked her up

Her first night with me...already making herself at home!

And then a week after we had her, we took her on her first hike!

Layla is now two and half and she weighs in at 60 whopping pounds. She now barks and growls whenever any walks up the stairs in our apartment building...she's a fabulous guard dog. And shy? No way. The little dog who used to cower behind sofas and tables is now quite the greeting committee when guests come over. She's come a long way in two years! And more importantly, she is now spoiled rotten and has only child syndrome, as my mom says. She lives pretty nicely in our home. She eats totally organic since she has crazy food allergies, she has a cozier bed than we do, has many rawhides and stuffed animals, and she gets to go for two and half mile walks almost every night. She has made out pretty well since her early days!
