welcome june

It is officially June which means it's officially time to pack up this house so I can be living in North Carolina by the end of the month. At this time next month, I'll be an North Carolina resident. Crazy!

This month will include a lot of cleaning. A lot of organizing.
A lot of purging. A good ol' fashioned yard sale.
I have a lot to get done.

J ordered us about a million and one boxes from used cardboard boxes. And my goal is to do at least a few boxes a night. I figure if I slowly chip away at it, it won't be all too terrible that last week as I tie up loose ends around here. School gets out on June 17 and I'm giving myself an extra week to clean and pack. Our official move date will likely be the 25th. Only 25 days people!

Any great packing tips for this very unorganized girl? I'm labeling my boxes for the first time ever which I think will help a great deal. I'm considering looking for a good deal on a house cleaner to clean everything after we're out for good. Anyone else suggest this? Or would you call it a waste of money? I just don't know if I'm up for a deep, heavy cleaning after all my belongings are gone and on their way to NC. Ughhhh....moving is the worst.

But I suppose the end result will be worthwhile. We're pretty excited to start exploring a new city and state!

  1. Labelling helped us so much. I also put "open first!" on the most important boxes. Once I unpacked the good stuff, I slowly made it through everything else...or just tossed the junk out.

  2. My friend told me that she would help me pack if I went to Costco and bought a bitching of paper towels. They ended up working great for packing! So much easier and cleaner then paper. Once we unpacked we just kept a basket of the 'used' paper towels in the kitchen.

That was one of the best tips I can give you.

  5. One tip I learned when we moved was to not only label the contents of the package, but what room it should go to like "dishes, kitchen" or "papers, upstairs 2nd bedroom" - it was supposed to be a tip for if you're using movers. We didn't have movers, but we did have helpers and it was great to not have to stop and explain where every single box was supposed to go. Good luck- I;m anxious to move into a new house, but not excited for the actual packing and moving!

  6. If you're using movers, ask if they have hanging wardrobes that you can use for free. A lot of big moving companies will charge you for this, but we always use small business movers and this is always my big bargaining point! Not having to pack clothes = AMAZING. If there is space in your dresser drawers, pack stuff in there {if you're not having to lift it all yourself} - I always pack the frames and knick knacks that we have on our bedside tables and dressers in the furniture itself!

Buy a huge bulk roll of butcher paper to wrap with instead of wasting a bunch of money on bubble wrap or getting all your stuff inky with newspaper!

Definitely spring for the cleaner to come spruce things up - especially if you have a lease deposit that you can get back! I've done this was my past moves but not for our last one and I BIG TIME regretted it.

    Good luck!

  7. Ooo! One more thing I learned last time! Pack all your remotes controls, power cords, surge protectors, etc in ONE box! Otherwise they end up in different boxes that you don't unpack immediately and when all you want to do is lay on the floor with your take-out picnic and plug your computer in, you're going to be super annoyed when you can't find your power cord and you have no clue which box it's packed in!

  8. Oh I hate packing! I'm definitely no help! My husband has threatened to send me out of town the next time we move because he claims he can get so much more done without me! Ha!

  9. Yes! Hire a cleaner. You're going to be tired and so over moving that it will be a load off your mind! ps. Don't move. :)

  10. Oh girl! Definitely hire someone to come clean. You don't need to stress!

And yes, label all your boxes with the room they will go into, so when you're unloading, you know exactly what goes where. Then it's just unpacking them. :)

  11. As someone who has moved 11 times n 8 years I definitely am a proponent of packing a few boxes a night and hiring someone to come clean your house for you. Ugh, I hate moving, but I LOVE moving into a new place and making it my own. Good luck!

  12. I've never heard of this usedcardboardboxes.com, such a great idea! We are always scrounging for boxes when we move, and they end up getting so expensive when you buy them new.

Good luck with your packing, I know it can be very stressful! I would definitely hire some cleaners once you get packed up. Otherwise you have to leave all of your cleaning stuff out of your packing, and it ends up being such a HUGE pain.

  14. Good luck with everything! I loathe packing... hope you enjoy it more than I do!

Also - I have a bunch of boxtops for you... do you want me to send them out?
