4 Months

Little M, on Monday you turned four months old. FOUR MONTHS! That's one third of a year. And in those four months you have blossomed into a happy little lady, full of personality!

This past month was the month of your hands! At the beginning of the month you were stating to figure them out, but you still missed a lot when you went to grab for things. Now you seem to have about 90% accuracy with me. It's crazy how it just sort of clicked one day. You love to chew on your hands, and any toy you can get in your mouth. I don't think you're teething, but I guess that could be a possibility. You do drool a ton! With your newfound ability to use your hands, you have also become a bit of a thumb sucker. On multiple occasions I've gone to check on you in your bed and your sucking away on that thumb. You do still like your paci, but only when you're sleepy. If I try to give it to you at other times, you scrunch your eyebrows up and give me a look that says, "what the heck am I supposed to do with this?"

Speaking of sleepy, you have started to rub your eyes when you're tired. It's precious! It becomes very obvious when you're feeling sleepy! About a week ago I moved you to sleeping in your sleep more swaddle! Overall, you've done really well. You do great at night time, but I've had to bring the swaddle back for a nap or two, because you just wouldn't calm down. At night time, you typically sleep from about 9PM - 8:8/8:30AM. I would really love to move your bedtime up by an hour, but I've yet to be succesfull with that. You have such a great routine, that I don't want to mess it up. You nap three times a day; usually two good naps and one shorter nap that's about 30-45 minutes.

This month you have really started to enjoy books! We've been reading to you since you were teeny tiny, but this was the month when you really started to pay attention to them. You especially like books with a sing song pattern and rhyming. Favorites include Brown Bear, Brown Bear, ABC by Dr. Seuss and Pajama Time. You also love for Mommy to sing The Itsy Bitsy Spider and Patty Cake. And song time with Dad and his guitar is one of your favorite activities.

Mommy and Daddy love to find goofy ways to make you laugh. Your laugh is my favorite sound, and it usually ends up with me in tears from my own laughter. The other night you were in the Ergo and the puppies were wrestling. I said "Get her, Layla" and you started cackling. I said this about a dozen more times and each time you just lit up. I love these funny little moments with you. When you aren't laughing, you are likely squeaking and squealing! I call you my little bird or baby pterodactyl. Both names are very fitting for the noises you make!

On January 30, you rolled from your belly to your back for the first time. Some days when I put you down for tummy time, you immediately roll! But other times you seem to have no interest in it. No rolling from back to belly yet. Which is fine by me, I can lay you down, leave the room, and you're still in the same place when I come back. I have a feeling these days are numbered!

Some new toys this month...we broke out your exercauser and bumbo and both have been big hits. You continue to love being upright, so both of these keep you pretty happy. You still love your playmat and bouncy seat, and tummy time is much better tolerated these days.

Sweet baby, I could go on and on about the ways you light up our lives each day. You are so happy most of the time, and now that you've begun to find your voice, our home is filled with such happy sounds.

Happy 4 months, Piglet...we love you the most!

Weight - 16 pounds 2 ounces
Height - 25.5 inches
Diaper Size - 2 in disposables, 3 snaps open in your BG's
Clothes - Pretty much all 3-6 month or 6 month in Carter's
Eyes - still very blue!
Hair - So much has fallen out, and you have quite the bald spot in the back! You still have a decent amount on the bottom in the back and it's dark, but I'm starting to think the stuff coming in on top may be a little lighter? It's hard to tell when there's not much!

hodge podge

So many random updates below....consider yourself warned!

  1. After 16 weeks, M is done with the swaddle. Our little "swaaddleritto" (as her dad once called her), is no more. I totally teared up when I looked down at her crib and saw this for the first time. Grow down baby girl!!

2. This past weekend we went to one of our favorite local places for lunch. M was a total champ. I'm trying to take advantage of this happy stage while we can. I know that going out to lunch won't always be easy with a little one. But right now, she's a champ! Keep it up, Mags!

3. My child LOVES her dad. I mean, she's happy with me all day long, but the minute she lays eyes on him, she just starts beaming. Just look at this picture....

Each night between dinner and bath time, M and J have song time. For about 30-45 minutes, he plays guitar and she sits and listens and "sings" along. It kills me. She's a big fan of The Lumineers' "Ho Hey."

4. We are slowly working our way through Breaking Bad on Netflix. I can't believe it took us so long to get on board with this show. It's crazy, in a good way. Also, I've never really considered using crystal meth to be a good idea, but this show has really confirmed that. I'm sure you're all glad to hear that. I'll keep my teeth and healthy skin, thankyouverymuch.

5. We went to a birthday first party for one of M's little buddies this weekend, and baby looked pretty darn cute! And it's only necessary to share a picture with y'all. Also? As we watched her little buddy dig into his chocolate cake, it totally got me thinking about her first birthday. And then I had to stop myself before I started crying right then and there.

Menu Monday

Howdy and happy Monday!

Hope your weekend was a nice one. Ours was super rainy and dreary on Saturday, but super sunny and nice on Sunday. Hopefully we'll have more of the latter this week

Onto the meals....

Pork Tenderloin, Green Beans, and Ina's Mustard Roasted Potatoes

No secret recipe for the was just a store bought marinated tenderloin and I cooked according to the package. Such an easy and simple dinner.

The Infamous Spicy Sausage Pasta and Roasted Brussels Sprouts

If you still haven't made this, GET ON IT.

This was just okay. The flavor was kind of bland, but I think it has potential...maybe some tomato sauce and more seasoning? I wouldn't write off completely.

As always, this was great! I never tire of this dish!

I said to J when we ate this last night that it's my favorite pizza recipe. It's so different, but so tasty!

First Snow!

Last Friday it was in the mid 60's here and J spent the afternoon working from home....on our deck! And 24 hours later, they were calling for a little snow. I have yet to see any snow in my 20 months of living here, mostly just ice or flurries, so I was skeptical. But low and behold, mother nature did give us a little snow to enjoy last Saturday evening. When it was all said and done we had maybe an inch? I realize this is nothing to those of you up north, but we were delighted. It made for some great "first snow" photos with the baby!

Totally unimpressed by it when her mom holds her, but completely delighted when her dad's got her!

Vertical Cork Board

Back in January, I did a post with my goals for the year. One goal I had was to try something new each month. A recipe, a craft, a home project...something! At the end of January I made my first project of the year, and I have to admit. I loved how it turned out! I'm a week behind on the link up, but I'm still going to link up with Sarah's blog for her "Proof is in the Pin" series!

So what did I make? A vertical cork board!

We have hundreds of wine corks (mostly from cheap Trader Joe's wine) that have been piling up in a bowl in our home for 4+ years, and I thought it was time to put 'em to good use.

All I had to purchase for this craft was a yard stick, and that was under a dollar at Lowe's. Cheapest craft ever! I took my corks and hot glued them onto the yard stick, like so....

Let it dry....

Screw in an eye hook to the top (we already had that), and then nail to the wall....

And voila! We now have fun new place in our kichen to display birth announcements, party invites, save the dates, etc! I should also note I used some 3M command strips to hold it in place to the wall so it won't swing back in forth.

Again...easiest and cheapest craft ever.
And it's impossible to mess up!
(But beware of hot glue gun burns)

When M was born, my mom and dad went through some old boxes in their attics and found a huge lot of my old baby clothes. Some are hilariously dated, while others are so precious and timeless.

One outfit that we found in my old pile of clothes, was an outfit I wore in my six month photos. We've laughed since before M arrived that she would be a big baby. My husband and all of his siblings were big babies, where as I was a petite baby, barely 18 pounds at my first birthday. M is definitely taking after her dad as she's in the 90%+ percentile for all of her stats. With this being said, my sweet 6 month outfit fits her perfectly at 3.5 months old.

See any resemblance?

I love my big baby!

Menu Monday

Happy President's Day!
Hope you'll share what you're cooking in the link up below!

Lobster Tail with Baked Potatoes and a Salad

On Valentine's Day, a friend sent me a coupon for Earth Fare for a great deal on lobster tail. Knowing that big Valentine's plans weren't really going to happen for us this year, this was a great alternative!

Like always, it was delicious! And like always, we used shredded parmesan instead of gorgonzola.

Possibly my favorite risotto recipe. I must note though, it doesn't make much. I think I need to start doubling the recipe!

I pinned this months ago, but just got around to making it. This is such an easy way to do fajitas. We'll definitely be making this again. We topped ours with cheese and avocado, but next time I'll also get some cilantro and lime!

This was perfect for our unexpected snow day on Saturday!

I don't think words are really needed here...

Hope your day is filled with lots of hugs and kisses....and chocolates!

(I totally stole this picture idea from Rachel and her little Ari!)

Something nice...or maybe a little too much time on my hands...

Some of you will laugh at this post and say I am a total type A, over prepared, maniac. And that's fine. Because when I was at the end of my pregnancy, that's exactly what I was. I wasn't working, which was a huge blessing, but it gave me way too much time to obsess over all things baby and delivery. My husband and my mom gave me a hard time, because with all of this "waiting time," I tried to be as prepared as I could for the birth. This meant ironing the robe I was taking to the hospital, picking out a new pillow case to put on my pillow, obsessing over my hospital bag, and coming up with a way to thank our nurses and other staff at the hospital. In a perfect world, I'd love to bake them something. But when you don't know when you're baby is coming, that makes it a little tricky. Also...standing at your kitchen counter and cooking/baking at 40 weeks pregnant is way exhausting.

So instead of baking, I went with the next best thing...Trader Joes! I dragged my big ol' belly to TJ's, bought some trail mix and other snacks for us to keep our room at the hospital, and I also picked up some sweet treats for the nurses. I actually bought these about 3 weeks before my delivery, but it was great knowing they were ready to go!

I put a pretty sticker on top, tied a big bow, and called it a success! Into the hospital bag they went!

Do I know if the nurses enjoyed them? I really have no idea, but I hope they at least brightened their day a little bit. Those ladies busted their butts taking care of us and I wanted to do something to show our appreciation.

For those of you who have had a baby or other planned hospital stays....did you do something nice for the nurses who took care of you?

Menu Monday

Did you do some cooking last week? Or have you put together a great meal plan for the coming week? Hope you'll link up your meal plans below!

Gnocchi, Chicken Sausage, Peas, and Pesto

No real recipe for this one. Just cooked the gnocchi according the package directions and tossed it in a pan with the other ingredients and a tablespoon or two of butter. Not bad for a meal I sort of threw together!

Orzo with Parmesan and Basil and Browned Shrimp

A lighter pasta dish. But very yummy.

J made these...not bad at all! And there were no veggies with this meal. Oops. A lot of the times we eat salads that I don't picture, but not on this night. Just greasy sandwiches and chips.

A trusty favorite!

I had heard some great things about this lasagna...and you people weren't kidding. It was pretty awesome. This picture definitely doesn't do it justice.

5 Things on Wednesday

1. I bought this dress at Old Navy on Saturday so I could wear it to Katie's shower over the weekend. I have no dresses that work for nursing, so I wanted to get something that could fill the gap in my wardrobe, and this does the trick! It's perfect with leggings and boots, and will hopefully look cute with bare legs as the weather gets warmer.

2. I'm currently trying to put together our mantel in our living room. It had pretty much nothing on it all summer and fall, then I had it looking pretty cute for Christmas, but now we're back to nothing and that needs to change. I'll share pictures once it's's some ideas I like that I found on Pinterest...

3. Somebody rolled over from tummy to back last week! She's done it a few times since's crazy how much these babies change from week to week!

4. It seems like I've been seeing "green" smoothies on others' blogs for months now, but I was a little too intimidated to try it out. I just figured there was no way it would taste good, and you had to taste the spinach. But when I was home visiting my parents 2 week ago, my mom and I decided to give them a try, and it turns out, they're actually pretty good! I have had one for breakfast everyday for the past week. They've also gotten tastier as I get a better handle on the right proportions of ingredients.

I typically use half a banana, about 1/2 cup of vanilla almond milk, a BIG handful of spinach, and then some mixture of other fruits. I've done raspberries, mixed berries, kiwi, pineapple, many choices! I've been using mostly frozen fruit, but I'll probably use fresh as it comes in season. Sometimes I'll also do a small squeeze of local honey if I think it needs just a little something to sweeten it up. If you're intimidated by these, don't be! They're a quick and yummy way to get your day started in a healthy way (so.much.rhyming!)

5. I'm really excited that my Wednesday morning Bible Study is starting back up today. We're doing Beth Moore's James: Mercy Triumphs study. Anyone done this study?

cupcakes, ice cream cones, and baby showers!

I've mentioned before how much I love the friends and people I've met since moving to Charlotte. A lot of those people are friends I met through the blogging world, and amazingly enough, a lot of them are having babies this year! Lots of little buddies for M to play with! I can't wait for warm weather and trips to the park with all these moms and babies.

A couple of weeks ago, Michelle and I planned a surprise dinner for our friend Ashley to celebrate the arrival of her second baby. We invited a few of Ashley's friends and her sweet mom and asked everyone to bring some diapers for her to use (because what new mom doesn't need diapers??). She was certainly surprised to see a table full of friends when she walked in. Her face was priceless! I had fun getting out and enjoying time with these ladies. Also?? This was my first margarita post pregnancy, and y' was good!

And of course we enjoyed some pink and blue cupcakes! I just can't wait to find out if her second baby is a boy or a girl...I'm guessing boy, though!

This past weekend, M and I got all dressed up for another shower!

Katie is having a baby girl in March, and I'm just thrilled for her.
I can't wait for that baby girl to get here!

Isn't she such a glowing momma to be?? What you can't see in this picture is her ice cream cone! Her hostesses had an ice cream sundae bar set up; I loved that idea!

By the end, my baby girl was exhausted from all the fun!

Only a few more weeks and both of these babies will be here. We can't wait!
