The beginning of an epic road trip vacation...

After twelve nights (12!) away from home and 2,304 miles put on my Pilot, we are home from BIG trip with a little baby!

We usually spend one week each summer in Westport, NY on Lake Champlain with my husband's family.

His family has a beautiful piece of lake front property there that dates back to the 1800's and has 8 (I think?) houses on it. It's an amazing place that has helped him stay connected with so much extended family. It seemed a little crazy to make the trip this year, since it's 17 hours from Charlotte, with a little one. But J's big brother was getting married there on July 27, so there was no way we'd miss it.

We toyed with the idea of flying, but it looked like flying would require at least one layover + a ferry ride, so the better option was for us was to drive. Plus, we'd have to check our pak n play since we wouldn't have one where we were going. As much as a plane trip would have been nice, it just didn't seem to be the better option here. So on Wednesday, July 24, we drove 5 hours to Richmond and stayed one night with my mom and dad. We took it east on Thursday, J took a decent mid day nap, and then we hit the road to Westport at 9PM and drove the next 12 hours of our trip through the night. I was terrified of how M would do, but after a bit of a rough start (dirty diaper one hour into the trip, night construction around DC, and a baby who wanted to laugh and clap her hands at 11pm), she did fantastic. We arrived at our destination at 8:30AM very sleepy, but quite happy.

After some naps and playing with M's cousins, we checked into our room at the pace where the wedding was being held, and we headed to lunch at the marina in town. Anyone else have a baby who loves to eat out because she gets to play with a menu?

These mozzarella sticks and raspberry sauce are the main reason we eat at the marina!

I had one delicious lobster roll! Good food was definitely needed when you're going on about three hours of sleep.

After lunch we got a few photos by the water. You can't quite see it in our eyes, but I promise our smiles were screaming, "WE MADE IT!"

Clearly M was really into family photos.

  1. Wow! That sounds like an awesome time!

  2. Oh, lady...I'm feeling ya on the 15 hour road trip. We drove to CT - with an almost four-year-old and a six-month-old in June to visit my little sister. We also drove through the night and after a few hairy moments (as in, 'you are NOT supposed to be awake right now!'), all went well and we arrived exhausted but happy. I can't wait to hear more about your trip! These are things we'll always remember, right?!

  3. That's awesome! You pretty much rock in my book. I have another friend who's just gone from Texas to South Carolina (via car) with her 3 littles in tow (all under 4). Some days I cringe just thinking about going to the grocery store with Isaac. ;)

  4. That food looks pretty amazing! Raspberry sauce with mozzerella sticks??? Who would have thought :) we love road-tripping, even with the little ones!!!

  5. You need to post more about the wedding and trip!!

  6. Road trips with little ones are always fun. Glad that M didn't scream the whole way for you.
